Lydden Hill circuit owner Pat Doran is eager to see the FIA World Rallycross Championship’s powerful new electric beasts take to the popular Kent venue this summer (22-23 July), as the series returns to Britain for the first time in four years.
Lydden was a fixture on the World Championship calendar every season from 2014 to 2017, and as the sport’s spiritual home – with rallycross having been born there on 4 February, 1967 – it has always held a special place in drivers’ and fans’ affections.
Since World RX last visited, the track has undergone a number of significant modifications to improve the show. Doran – four times a British Rallycross Champion himself, and runner-up in the European Championship standings in 1992 – believes race-goers in six months’ time are in for a real treat.
“Rallycross fans in the UK have been longing for the World Championship to return, and the only place for that to happen is Lydden Hill,” he stated. “Not only is our circuit steeped in history, but we have made big changes to the layout in the last 12 months that have been years in planning.
“It’s not easy to take a well-loved venue and make changes that improve it, but the feedback we’ve had from drivers and spectators has been very positive. We are constantly striving to improve Lydden Hill, and we can’t wait to host a weekend of World RX action for the first time since 2017.
“It will be very interesting to see how the new electric cars at the top level take to Lydden Hill, and having World RX complemented by RX2e and the 5 Nations BRX Supercar class will make for an exciting line-up. We have a few surprises for the event to come too, that give a nod to rallycross history...”
