For the first time in four years this weekend (19-20 August), top-flight European rallycross is back at Germany’s Estering – one of the oldest and most popular tracks in the sport. All of Sunday’s action will be broadcast live on Rally.TV. Here are five of the top reasons to tune in...

Return to a rallycross classic

At just 890 metres in length, the Estering might be the shortest circuit on the 2023 calendar, but it certainly packs a punch, from the epic first corner – where Kevin Eriksson pulled off his famous ‘round the outside’ move seven years ago – to the tight-and-twisty end-of-lap joker, which contributed to the closest finish in FIA World Rallycross Championship history in 2014.

Titles on the line

All three championships are set to be decided this weekend, and if Euro RX1 looks reasonably clear-cut – with defending champion Anton Marklund holding a commanding 20-point advantage and sitting top of the table at the end of the opening day – then the battle is wide open in both RX2e and Euro RX3, with only five points blanketing the title protagonists in both series. With so much at stake, Sunday’s racing is set to be fast-paced and frenetic throughout.

Scrap for the runner-up spoils

Marklund might be almost home and dry in Euro RX1, but just four points cover the next three drivers in the classification – Jānis Baumanis, Enzo Ide and Patrick O’Donovan – and the trio proved to be evenly-matched again in heats one and two in Germany, sitting respectively third, fourth and sixth in the intermediate standings. All three are hard-chargers renowned for not giving an inch – so who will prevail in the scrap for the runner-up spoils?

World RX stars taking on the RX2e regulars

The RX2e title hopefuls don’t only need to look out for their regular rivals this weekend – they also need to keep an eye on two ‘jokers’ in the pack, as CE Dealer Team by Volvo Construction Equipment duo Niclas Grönholm and Klara Andersson join the fray. The Finn endured a tough first day in Buxtehude, but his Swedish stablemate is right in the mix, as she sets her sights on a second podium finish in international rallycross...
